Ray Tubes Select 6SN7 – the new production tube that finally gets it right

Fewer than 5% make the cut

The Ray Tubes Select 6SN7 is not a factory tube with a premium sticker. Fewer than 5% of production meets Ray Tubes' voltage, current, and sound signature standards — consequently, each Select carries a consistency and reliability that new production tubes rarely deliver. Hand-selected and tested by audio engineers with decades of experience, the Select 6SN7 combines the predictability of modern manufacturing with the sonic character audiophiles have long associated with carefully sourced New Old Stock.

Sound character: neutral, open, detailed

The Select 6SN7 presents a broadly neutral tonal balance with a degree of warmth. Bass is well-controlled and precise; the midrange is clear and direct without being clinical. High frequencies are open and resolving — moreover, the tube maintains composure under demanding conditions without introducing sibilance or grain. It is therefore well suited to driver stages in power amplifiers, tube preamplifiers, and valve-output DAC stages. Tube rolling with the Select 6SN7 yields predictable, satisfying results across a wide range of compatible amplifiers.

Construction and build quality

Gold pins provide corrosion resistance and superior conduction over the long term. The coke-bottle glass profile gives the tube a distinctive appearance — note, however, that it stands taller than a standard 6SN7, so fitment in tight chassis should be confirmed beforehand. Each tube ships with a user handbook, burn-in guidelines, and a certificate of authenticity. Above all, it comes backed by Ray Tubes' 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects — something virtually unheard of in the NOS market.

Select or Reserve?

Ray Tubes offers two tiers above their Core range. The Select 6SN7 is the best tube you will ever need: rigorous selection, gold pins, and consistent audio performance. The Reserve 6SN7 goes further still — bespoke design, monocrystalline carbon Magic Coating, and an optional rubber damper for microphonics. Both originate from the same production batches; the difference lies in an additional layer of expert selection and proprietary treatment. Novus Audio can advise on which variant suits your system best.

Frequently asked questions

Which amplifiers are compatible with the Ray Tubes Select 6SN7?

The 6SN7 is one of the most widely used small-signal tubes in high-end audio. It appears in the driver stages of power amplifiers, in preamplifiers, and in valve-output DAC stages. Ray Tubes maintains a compatibility list on their website. Novus Audio is happy to advise on suitability for your specific device.

What is the difference between the Select and the Reserve 6SN7?

Both variants pass the same quality control process and are drawn from identical production batches. The Reserve adds a monocrystalline carbon Magic Coating and ships with an optional rubber damper to address microphonics. The Select is the benchmark for new production 6SN7 tubes; the Reserve is for those who want the absolute best available.

How long is the recommended burn-in period?

Ray Tubes recommends at least 50 hours before forming a final judgement on sound quality. Each tube undergoes a factory burn-in prior to dispatch — furthermore, listening experience suggests the sound continues to settle and improve beyond that initial period.

Not sure which tube is right for your system?

The team at Novus Audio can help you choose between Select and Reserve, single or matched set — based on your amplifier and your listening preferences.
