MastersounD Icona – a single-ended KT150 Class A integrated amplifier with triode/pentode switching
The only single-ended KT150 in the MastersounD range
The MastersounD Icona is unique in the MastersounD lineup — the only amplifier that runs the KT150 valve in a single-ended Class A circuit. Consequently, it combines the power and dynamics of the KT150 with the directness and musicality that single-ended amplification is known for. Since a triode/pentode switch is built in, two distinct characters are available: 2× 12 W in triode mode or 2× 24 W in pentode mode. Both operate in Class A with zero negative feedback.
Single-ended KT150 — an unusual combination
The KT150 is the most powerful pentode in the KT88/6550 family and is typically used in push-pull circuits. MastersounD therefore takes a deliberate step by running it single-ended. As a result, the Icona sounds more direct and fluid than its power figures suggest — reviewers describe it as faster and more dynamic than the Duetrenta, despite comparable output. Since MastersounD's hand-wound output transformers are refined enough to eliminate negative feedback, the musical openness of the circuit is thereby fully preserved.
Built-in phono stage and compact dimensions
The Icona includes a built-in MM phono stage, so a turntable connects directly. Furthermore, three single-ended RCA line inputs, a fixed line output and a preamplified output are provided. Automatic bias keeps the KT150 valves at their optimal operating point at all times. Moreover, at just 22 kg and 49×33×23 cm, the Icona is the most compact integrated amplifier in the MastersounD range.
Italian design and craftsmanship
Above all, the Icona stands apart visually — the Y-shaped metal valve cage gives it a sculptural, timeless presence that makes it as much a design object as an audio component. Since every unit is hand-built in Arcugnano, Vicenza, each Icona is individually assembled and tested before leaving the factory. It is consequently the natural choice for those who want single-ended musicality with more power than a 300B amplifier provides.

Frequently asked questions about the MastersounD Icona
What makes the Icona unique in the MastersounD range?
The Icona is the only MastersounD amplifier that runs the KT150 in a single-ended circuit. Since single-ended topologies preserve directness and tonal fluency that push-pull designs cannot match, the Icona consequently offers a musical character that sits between the 300B models and the more powerful Gemini.
What is the difference between pentode and triode mode?
In pentode mode the Icona delivers 2× 24 W — more grip and dynamic range. In triode mode output drops to 2× 12 W, but the sound becomes softer and more intimate. Since both modes operate in Class A with zero feedback, the tonal character remains consistent throughout.
Which loudspeakers suit the MastersounD Icona?
Loudspeakers of 88 dB sensitivity or above work best with the Icona. Since the single-ended circuit sounds livelier than the power figures suggest, it is moreover compatible with a wider range of speakers than comparable amplifiers at this output level.
