Cambridge Audio Evo 150 SE – all-in-one amplifier with StreamMagic and Hypex NCOREx

The Evo 150 SE is Cambridge Audio's most accomplished streaming amplifier to date — 150 watts per channel, an ESS Sabre reference DAC, a built-in phono stage, HDMI ARC and the fourth-generation StreamMagic platform, all in a box the size of a vinyl sleeve. If you want a single component that handles everything without compromise, this is the one to audition.

Cambridge Audio Evo 150 SE all-in-one amplifier — NCOREx amplification and DAC

The Hypex NCOREx modules have been custom-tuned by Cambridge's engineers in London — not a generic Class D implementation, but a deliberate voicing decision. Because of this, the result is controlled, dynamic and surprisingly musical for a switching amplifier. The ESS Sabre ES9018K2M DAC handles everything up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD256 via USB, with coaxial and optical inputs covering up to 192kHz PCM. Both balanced XLR and RCA analogue inputs are on board, and a competent moving magnet phono stage removes the need for an outboard preamp altogether.

StreamMagic Gen 4 and connectivity

StreamMagic Gen 4 is one of the better streaming platforms available — stable, well-supported and regularly updated. Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer, UPnP and internet radio all work natively, while AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Bluetooth aptX HD cover wireless streaming. The unit is fully Roon Ready, and HDMI ARC integrates a TV cleanly without additional boxes. Two sets of speaker terminals furthermore allow a second room to be driven simultaneously.

Design and usability

At 317mm square — the footprint of a record sleeve — the Evo 150 SE fits where most separates cannot. Two sets of interchangeable side panels ship in the box: real wood veneer and an industrial finish, both attaching magnetically and swapping in seconds. Because the dual-concentric front dial, StreamMagic app and supplied remote all work intuitively, this is a component that is genuinely easy to live with day to day. For those who prefer a dedicated CD source, the matching Evo CD transport pairs seamlessly via the same app.

Frequently asked questions about the Cambridge Audio Evo 150 SE

What has changed from the Evo 150 to the Evo 150 SE?

The SE uses new Hypex NCOREx amplifier modules with a revised signal path throughout — not a cosmetic update. Furthermore, StreamMagic has been upgraded to the fourth generation, bringing improved stability and expanded service support.

Can the Evo 150 SE be used as a preamp only?

Yes — preamp outputs are provided for use with an external power amplifier or active speakers, with the internal amplifier bypassed.

Does the Evo 150 SE work with a turntable?

Indeed — the built-in MM phono stage accepts moving magnet cartridges directly, so no external phono preamp is required.
