Epos ES-7N – a compact loudspeaker that goes anywhere and sounds like it shouldn't

The smallest Epos — the most flexible

The Epos ES-7N is Karl-Heinz Fink's answer to a genuine problem: how do you make a high-end speaker that works properly in a bookshelf, against a wall, or on a stand — without compromising on any of them? A rear-panel toggle switch adjusts the crossover characteristic to suit the placement. In the free position, the ES-7N is optimised for stand mounting with some distance from the wall. Flick it down and the mid and treble output rises relative to the bass, keeping tonal balance correct when the speaker is placed close to a wall or inside a shelf unit. As a result, it is one of the very few speakers at this level that genuinely delivers on that promise.

Drive units — shared DNA with the ES-14N

The tweeter is identical to the one used in the ES-14N — a 28 mm aluminium/ceramic compound dome without ferrofluid, giving the ES-7N the same natural, fatigue-free treble. Below 2 kHz, a 130 mm bass/mid driver takes over, using a mica-loaded polypropylene cone, Nomex spider and a 30 mm voice coil on a glass fibre/epoxy former. A double-magnet motor compensates stray fields and increases driving force, while an impedance control ring minimises distortion and intermodulation. Consequently, the ES-7N punches well above its size in terms of bass control and midrange resolution.

Cabinet and front-firing port

Two layers of 8 mm MDF bonded with a lossy adhesive form the cabinet walls — the same sandwich construction as the ES-28N. An additional wooden block on the top panel adds rigidity and thereby improves stereo imaging. Because the reflex port fires forward and is tuned to 48 Hz, bass performance is not compromised by wall placement or enclosure use. Four rubber spikes on the base isolate the cabinet acoustically from whatever surface it sits on.

Sensitivity and placement

In the free position, sensitivity measures 86 dB at 2.83 V/1 m. With the switch set to wall position, sensitivity rises to 89 dB and the tonal balance adjusts accordingly. Because nominal impedance is 4 ohms with a minimum of 3 ohms at 15 kHz, the ES-7N presents a straightforward load that works with a wide range of amplifiers — from modest integrated amps to more serious electronics.

Frequently asked questions about the Epos ES-7N

Can the ES-7N really be used inside a bookshelf?

Yes — the front-firing port and placement switch make it one of the very few high-end speakers that works properly inside a shelf unit or against a wall without losing tonal balance. Epos demonstrated it working inside an Ikea Kallax unit at a hi-fi show, and the results were convincing.

What does the placement switch actually do?

It adjusts the crossover filter to compensate for the bass boost that wall and shelf placement naturally introduces. In the wall position, mid and treble output is raised relative to the bass, thereby restoring correct tonal balance regardless of how close the speaker is to a boundary.

How does the ES-7N compare to the ES-14N?

Designed for larger rooms on dedicated stands, the ES-14N uses a bigger 7-inch woofer and goes deeper in the bass. By contrast, the ES-7N is smaller and far more flexible in placement — both share the same tweeter and cabinet philosophy, but operate on a different scale.
