Graham Audio LS8/1 – a three-way monitor in the direct lineage of the Spendor BC1
Five decades of heritage, thoroughly updated
Derek Hughes designed the Graham Audio LS8/1 as a contemporary interpretation of the classic 8-inch driver in a two-cubic-foot cabinet — the same format his father Spencer Hughes used for the legendary Spendor BC1 and the BBC LS3/6. Modern high-temperature motor materials consequently allow far greater power handling than the originals could achieve. As a result, the LS8/1 combines the musical openness and midrange resolution of the classic BBC monitor tradition with the dynamic range and reliability that contemporary listeners expect.
Three-way architecture with supertweeter
A 200 mm polypropylene bass/mid driver is joined by a 26 mm soft dome tweeter and a 19 mm soft dome supertweeter — thereby extending the frequency response to 20 kHz, well beyond the roughly 15–16 kHz ceiling of the original BC1. Both high-frequency units have protective metal grilles. Furthermore, a front panel switch adjusts the treble level by ±1 dB, allowing the LS8/1 to be matched to the acoustic character of the listening room. The grille attaches via concealed magnets and removes easily.
BBC thinwall cabinet with screwed panels
The cabinet uses 9 mm birch plywood, following the classic BBC thinwall approach. Unlike most designs, the front and rear panels are screwed rather than glued — a detail carried over from the original LS3/6. Since screwed panels decouple acoustically from the cabinet walls, coloration is further reduced and future maintenance is simplified. Internally, Graham Audio uses Rockwool rather than cheap foam, since its superior air damping properties better control internal reflections.
Midrange as a priority
Above all, the LS8/1 excels in the midrange — voices, string quartets, jazz and acoustic music come through with a realism that few loudspeakers match at any price. Moreover, the 8 ohm impedance and 87 dB sensitivity make it compatible with a wide range of amplifiers, from modest valve designs to powerful solid-state models. Graham Audio recommends 50 to 250 W for optimal performance.
