Spatial Europe MC Series No4 – dual voice coil woofer and dipole coaxial for extreme dynamics

Two technological advances in a single loudspeaker

The Spatial Europe MC Series No4 introduces two significant advances over the smaller MC models: a 15-inch dual voice coil woofer with a copper Faraday bushing and a 10-inch coaxial driver with a 1.75-inch spherical wave dipole horn open at the rear. The Faraday bushing in the magnet around the voice coil eliminates the need for any absorption circuit, consequently raising efficiency considerably and delivering a midrange free from inductance-related distortion. Furthermore, the No4 achieves an in-room frequency response from 22 Hz to 21 kHz, thereby reproducing the full scale of live music with genuine conviction. The MC Series No4 is available at Novus Audio in Kampen.

Dual voice coil woofer with Faraday bushing — a different class of bass

The copper Faraday bushing in the magnet of the 15-inch woofer eliminates non-linear distortion caused by inductance variation — a problem that is present in all conventional woofer designs. Consequently, the bass reproduction of the No4 is not only deeper, reaching down to 22 Hz, but also measurably cleaner. The dual voice coil construction furthermore enables more efficient drive, therefore allowing the system to perform fully from just 8 watts. Open-baffle construction moreover ensures that bass is fast, dry, and temporally coherent with the midrange — above all, this is what separates the No4 from any box loudspeaker at this frequency extension.

10-inch coaxial with dipole horn — open front and rear

The 10-inch coaxial driver is open at the rear, thereby radiating mid-high frequencies as a true dipole. This produces a more natural and spacious presentation than a closed rear chamber allows. The 1.75-inch spherical wave dipole horn features an optimised aluminium rear cover for controlled rearward dispersion. Consequently, the No4 combines the advantages of an open-baffle woofer with a coaxial mid-high system that also operates as a dipole — the result is complete spatial coherence from front to back of the listening room.

Premium components and placement

The No4 uses Jantzen capacitors and Jupiter Beeswax copper foil capacitors — a component level that clearly surpasses the No1, No2, and No3. Low-impedance Mundorf layer-core inductors, Mundorf Supreme resistors, and WBT NextGen binding posts are furthermore standard throughout. Spatial Europe recommends a minimum rear wall distance of 65 cm, a listening distance of at least 2.5 metres, and a room of no less than 20 m². Standard finishes are glimmer lacquer black or white; wood veneer is available at extra cost. All models require approximately 500 hours of run-in time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the advantage of the dual voice coil woofer in the MC Series No4?

The copper Faraday bushing eliminates non-linear distortion from inductance variation, consequently making bass reproduction both deeper and cleaner than conventional woofer designs allow. Furthermore, the dual voice coil construction enables more efficient drive, so 8 watts is sufficient for full performance.

What is the difference between the MC Series No3 and the MC Series No4?

The No3 uses two 15-inch woofers and an 8-inch coaxial driver; the No4 uses one 15-inch dual voice coil woofer with Faraday bushing and a 10-inch coaxial with open rear. Consequently, the No4 is technically more advanced and achieves a deeper bass extension of 22 Hz, while sensitivity at 94 dB is marginally lower than the 97 dB of the No3.

Which amplifiers suit the Spatial Europe MC Series No4?

Spatial Europe recommends the AMP No2 or AMP No3 as optimal partners. Thanks to the 94 dB sensitivity, the No4 performs excellently from 8 watts. Contact Novus Audio for personalised advice on the best amplifier pairing for your system.
