Raidho X1.6 – compact standmount, full-scale performance

Built entirely in-house, in Denmark

The Raidho X1.6 is a two-way standmount loudspeaker with one clear distinction: every driver is designed and built in Pandrup, Denmark. The pairing of a 165mm Ceramix mid-bass unit with Raidho's planar magnetic ribbon tweeter consequently delivers resolution and staging rarely heard at this price. Above all, the X1.6 proves that engineering investment matters more than cabinet sculpture.

The ribbon tweeter: Raidho's calling card

The planar magnetic tweeter is identical to the unit found throughout the entire Raidho range. At just 20 milligrams, the 11-micron foil is fifty times lighter than a conventional dome tweeter. There is no voice coil — conductor traces are embedded directly in the foil, thereby eliminating a significant source of coloration. Furthermore, the first breakup mode sits at 82kHz. Treble is therefore open, airy, and free of fatigue.

The Ceramix mid-bass driver

At 165mm, the Ceramix woofer is the largest driver in the X series. Its aluminium cone undergoes plasma-oxidation, growing a ceramic skin that is stiff, light, and self-damping. First breakup occurs at 12.5kHz — consequently almost two octaves above the 3.5kHz crossover. A neodymium magnet drives a titanium voice coil, moreover in an open basket for efficient cooling. The rear reflex port is tuned to 45Hz, delivering bass that is extended and fast.

Cabinet, placement, and amplification

The cast aluminium front baffle is 20mm thick — typically found only on speakers at several times the price. Inside, the MDF cabinet is braced throughout. Raidho specifies 50 watts minimum, though smaller valve amplifiers work well in modest rooms. Since impedance stays above 5.8Ω, the X1.6 is a straightforward load. One metre from the rear wall is therefore a sensible starting point. Allow 250 hours of run-in for best results.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Raidho X1.6 work well with valve amplifiers?

Yes. Raidho quotes 50 watts minimum, though smaller valve amplifiers perform well in rooms up to around 25 square metres. Since impedance never drops below 5.8Ω, the X1.6 presents no particular challenge. The ribbon tweeter pairs naturally with valve amplification, and tube rolling is furthermore a rewarding way to fine-tune the system's balance.

How critical is room placement?

The X1.6 is more forgiving than earlier Raidho designs, though placement still repays attention. One metre from the rear wall and 70–80 cm from the side walls works well as a starting point. Placing them too close to the rear wall makes the bass overly prominent. Toe-in is therefore worth exploring, since the ribbon tweeter is highly directional at upper frequencies.

What separates the X1.6 from the rest of the X series?

The key difference lies in the cone treatment. Models such as the X1t add a transition-metal coating — tantalum or titanium — thereby pushing distortion down further. On the X1.6, the ceramic layer alone is used, which is already highly capable. The ribbon tweeter, however, is identical across the entire Raidho range. Consequently, the family signature in the treble is fully present from this entry point upwards.
