The Morel Avyra 622 earns its place on the strength of what sits behind the baffle. Morel has built drive units since 1975, and other manufacturers use them too. Consequently, the Avyra 622 benefits from engineering normally reserved for far costlier designs. Every driver is developed and made in-house. Furthermore, the cabinet comes in five semi-matt finishes: black, white, oak, walnut and wenge.

A 75 mm external voice coil

The 160 mm mid/bass unit is the real talking point. Conventional woofers place the voice coil inside the magnet; Morel's EVC (External Voice Coil) design moves it outside. This allows a 75 mm coil wound from Hexatech aluminium wire – remarkable on a driver this size. A double vented ferrite magnet provides the drive. Moreover, the one-piece cone uses Morel's damped DPC composite, which suppresses break-up and distortion. The cone therefore moves as a true piston. Above all, the large coil sheds heat efficiently, so bass stays taut and composed at high levels.

Hand-made Acuflex tweeter

High frequencies are handled by a hand-made 28 mm Acuflex soft dome. A neodymium magnet and aluminium voice coil keep transients quick and precise. Consequently, voices and acoustic instruments sound natural, never edgy. The crossover sits at 2.2 kHz, thereby giving a seamless hand-off to the mid/bass unit.

Cabinet and system use

The 14-litre cabinet is CNC-machined from MDF, with sculpted side panels. A rear-firing reflex port extends the response down to 35 Hz – deep for a speaker of this size. Furthermore, the 622 works equally well in a stereo system or a home cinema built around the wider Avyra range. With 88 dB sensitivity and a 4-ohm load, it rewards an amplifier with genuine current delivery.
